Transaction Incoming: New York Rangers Looking To Secure This UFA Defenseman For The Right Price

The New York Rangers could find a way to add more depth with three unsigned UFAs remaining. The list is small, due to July 1st being a barnburner of a day. GM Chris Drury will be able to get meaningful depth at this point in the year for cheap. One name that continues to cross the team's radar is Matt Grzelcyk.Matt Grzelcyk

Teams hoping to improve their roster this late in August will have to offer league-minimum deals, rely on trades, or unconventional methods to find depth.
For the Rangers, there remain three UFAs who could end up being great additions to the lineup, for a good price.
While the list of NHL-quality talent has shrunk, these players could add secondary scoring to a lineup deprived of it last season.

Jack Roslovic has been linked to the Rangers

The New York Rangers have been linked to Jack Roslovic recently, after rumors he'd end up in a Maple Leafs jersey.
Since then, we haven't heard much movement on signing him, but the Rangers could find a spot in the lineup for this 22-goal scoring forward in 2025-26. Roslovic's last contract in the 2024-25 season was a 1-year, $2.8 million deal.
The Columbus-born forward scored 39 points in a Carolina Hurricanes uniform.

Max Pacioretty

Pacioretty started his career in the NHL as a sniper.
As his career evolves and he continues to age, like Jimmy Vesey, he's had to find a different gear in his game. He's still a great offensive threat, but he's had to dig into his toolset to find a way of staying relevant, which means playing a meaner game.
Pacioretty found a way to be a key player in the Maple Leafs' playoff run, scoring 8 points in 11 games. After playing only 37 games in the regular season, scoring only 13 points (5-8).
The Rangers could offer Pacioretty a bonus-laden contract with a similar AAV to what he earned last season, at $873K. Not to mention, they'd get another player who'd be a power-play threat.

Matt Grzelcyk

Grzelcyk played for the Pittsburgh Penguins as a depth defenseman in 2024-25. Known for his successes as a Boston Bruin in the past, the defenseman scored 40 points (1-39) in 82 games, a career-high.
He could be due a raise with the next team that signs him, after playing in Pittsburgh for a one-year deal, with an AAV of $2.75 million.
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound defenseman isn't known for his size, but could still offer some meaningful play for a contender in the NHL. Some GMs may have some hesitation given the Florida Panthers way of building an NHL team.
