The New York Rangers are in the process of picking the team's next captain. While many thought Mike Sullivan and Chris Drury might select Adam Fox, according to the New York Post's Larry Brooks, he's no longer an option.![Adam Fox]()
According to a recent report from the New York Post's Larry Brooks, the New York Rangers have ruled out one candidate for the Captaincy.
That is, former Norris Trophy defenseman Adam Fox, who has been the team's top defenseman since he arrived in 2019-20.
The team feels that they would be placing a burden upon Fox, who last season struggled at times. He'd put up a total of 10-51-61 in 74 games. Fox wouldn't have a season-long partner on the left side, which they hope is Vladislav Gavrikov, whom they acquired in free agency.
Â
Instead, they feel the best option for the team could end up being J.T. Miller or Vinnie Trocheck, whose names have both buzzed in discussions for the leadership position.
Trocheck, who played on the same line as Artemi Panarin in 2024-25, plays a gritty, hard-nosed game compared to his linemate. He's quickly assumed a role in leadership after Jacob Trouba's trade..
While Miller injected life into a stale offense last season, he also helped Mika Zibanejad find his groove again near the end of the year.
Both of these players could be viable options for ateam that hasn't had a Captain since 2024.
To be honest, it appears that Mike Sullivan wants Adam Fox to return to form, and reducing another burden of leadership off his shoulder might not be the worst idea.
And they could still end up going the same route as they did in 2021-22, where they had no true captain.
We'll see how the New York Rangers look mid-season, whether or not Miller or Trocheck earns the C.
For now, it appears Fox isn't it.
